Are You Going To Scarborough Faire?

The Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie, Texas, is one of the biggest and best Renaissance Faires we've attended. It really does take a full two days to enjoy it all, and given that it's a 5 hour drive from our home, we generally go down for the weekend.

As mentioned in my previous post, I took over 2400 photos at the faire this weekend: 600 on Saturday, and 1800 on Sunday. Even taking just the very best photos, and only one or two from each event/performance/ride, I have 64 post worthy photos from Saturday alone. That's a tenth of them that were not just good, but really great and needing to be shared. I have not looked at Sunday yet. I hope you do not get tired of Ren faire photos, as it will probably take several posts to share even just the very best of our weekend excursion.

Let's start with Saturday Morning.

Arriving at the Faire on Saturday Morning. The excitement builds. It's been three years since we made it to Scarborough, and we can't wait to get started.

The oldest three riding in the Barrel ride. The ride twisted as well as swung, so DD2 did not go. DD1 was not impressed, but you can't really see her in this photo.

The Corsairs. This group sings mostly pirate songs, and is quite good. We bought their latest CD, 9 Live, for the car.

The boys and youngest DD getting ready for the pirate ship ride. This one only swung back and forth, so we thought DD2 would be okay. She looks happy here, no?

She's not so happy here. :) This is why DD1 opted out of this ride.

Ok, I'm done. Get me out of this thing!

The misting bridge. A necessity in Texas in May.

A new hat for DS1. Another addition to his pirate costume, though he's not wearing his ren shirt in this photo.

A new hat for DH. The picture is dark, but it has one side snapped up and a feather for the Ren Faire. He can also wear it down as a fedora. It looks to be a versatile and useful hat.

Showing off their new hats. DS1 still doesn't know daddy was doing that to him. Wait 'til he sees this!

Brothers DS2 got his hat two weeks ago at the Muskogee Ren Faire. Now if they can just take care of them!

Ren Food! Fish n Chips

Ren Food! Pork pocket.

Trying on Daddy's hat.

Daddy being goofy in DS2's hat

Ok, enough fun and games.

More to come!

20, 5, and 6 in 4.

20 Pounds
That is what my supposed Bernese Mountain Dog mix weighs at 5 months. I'm thinking he's either a REALLY late bloomer, or there is more mix than Berner. And just my luck, based on his size, shape, coloring, and energy level, I think the mix is Australian Shepherd. Great - two hyper herding dogs in a house with cats and kids. RPG RBG should be able to publish his "Chaos Theory of Life, a Case Study" by summer, and have plenty of material left for a sequel or four. I want 10% 5% of your royalties, dude.

5 pounds
That is how much overweight my German Shepherd mix is at 2 and a half years. We had been feeding her puppy food for a couple weeks since we had trouble finding her regular food, and it was easier to just feed them both from the same bag. That will have to stop, and she needs to lay off the cat food too. I guess the walks are about both of us now, huh sweetie?

6 pounds in 4 weeks
My short term goal. I'm down 4 pounds in 3 weeks, and I'd like to make it 6 by next week. I'll be doing a TON of walking at the Renaissance Faire this weekend, so I think this is doable. I think I'd be closer to that now, but I found some leftover Easter candy last night. Darn chocolate coins, why did you have to be so creamy and yummy? I'm definitely improving - I didn't eat the whole bag, just a few for a treat. Plus, clothes add a pound or two right?

This One Goes To 11

Ok, resolution check time. How are you doing on this years resolutions? I am not doing well. After 2 months of minor improvement, I slid back to my normal habits for 2 months. I am now renewing my resolutions and trying to make improvements.

1 - Correspondence. Yeah, not so much. I am blogging more, and I've actually let a few people know about it, so I have actual readers now. But I need to step up the communication with family.

2. Declutter and clean - eh. Still not so great. We are not letting the house get quite so messy before we clean it up, but there's still a lot of clutter to get through. At least it's at a point where I am not going to be embarrassed to let a friend come in to feed my cats this weekend.

3. Getting healthier. I really slipped on this one, but now I'm back on the bandwagon. I've reduced my portions at mealtime, I'm eating more salads at dinner, and I've tried to cut out snacks. I'm reducing my caffeine, and I've had to work on my Diet Coke (and Caffeine Free Diet Coke) addiction as the carbonation was giving my reflux fits lately.

As for exercise, I still resent it. Yes, I hate it, like any normal lazy computer-obsessed techie would. But I resent the need for it, and I resent the time it takes away from things like scrapbooking, reading or just doing nothing. I have found this attitude much harder to overcome than simple laziness and out-of-shapeness.

But, I have now walked Daisy for 15 to 30 minutes a night, every night, for 11 days in a row. This is a big deal for me, as we have had 2 nights of thunderstorms and tornado warnings for me to work around during this time, and I did not use it as an excuse to skip our walk.

There may be hope for me yet.

How are you doing on your resolutions?

Unphotographable, That's What You Are

There are times when you just don't get the shot. You don't have a camera, or there are technical difficulties, or maybe it's just something you can't photograph. For those moments there is Unphotographable. I saw a wonderful graphic on Photojojo that inspired me to create my own. But I wasn't sure what it should be about. So I filed it away for the future.

Then, this week, we experienced our first, real, "Wow that's really close, everyone seek shelter" tornado. Inspiration fulfilled.

Where The Wind Comes Sweeping Down The Plains

It was a typical night in the LPF household. DH and DS1 had run out to the store to get DS1's concert uniform for his first orchestra concert the next night. I was home with the 3 younger kids. DD2 is watching Dora The Explorer or A Pup Named Scooby Doo, DD1 and DS2 are picking up their rooms.

It's just about 7pm, and dinner is almost ready. DH and DS1 have stopped at the Walmart for socks and a couple groceries, but I expect them back any minute. DS2 and DD1 are setting up for dinner. DD2 is fussing about having the wrong tray or some such nonsense, and the program she'd been watching has finished playback, and the satellite reverts to live tv. It's a weathercast, due to the severe thunderstorms raging overhead.

I pull the tray of homemade fries out of the fryer, and I'm just levering the last turkey burger out of the pan and onto the plate when I hear a noise. A noise I've rarely heard since moving to Oklahoma 3 years ago, and then only during Wednesday Noon Tests, but which I immediately recognize. I turn off the stove, head quickly to the back door and crack it. Yep, I was right.

Tornado sirens.

I leave dinner sitting on the counter, and tell the kids to get up and go into Mommy's closet. Oh, DS2 - please put the leashes on the dogs and bring them down to the closet too. I crack the back door again - "Here kitty kitty kitty. Here kitty." Darn, I don't have time to wait for them to come, and I don't hear the jingles of their collars. I know, I know DD2, you are hungry, but right now we need to go in Mommy's room, okay? I get the kids in my closet and grab the comforter off my bed. Hmmm... 4 people, 2 dogs, yeah - one's not going to be enough. I head into DS2's room, as his is closest to mine, to get his blanket. I pass Wyatt in the hall, and find Jesse on DS2's bed. I grab the blanket and the cats and put them in my room. With the way Daisy has been chasing the cats I'm not going to force them in closet, but I shut my bedroom door.

Ooops, Satellite is out from the rain. OK, plan B. I make one more trip to the living room, a quick call for Calamity out the door (no response, oh and the neighbors probably think I'm nuts taking time to call the cat with the sirens going) and grab my laptop.

DH calls. He and DS1 were about to check out when the sirens went off. They and everyone else in the store has been shepherded to the back of the store away from the big glass windows for safety. He'll be late coming home, and we should shelter. I tell him I've already got the kids and the dogs in the closet and I'm heading there with my laptop.

We plug in my laptop and run the cord into the closet. Thank heavens Mommy's closet is a walk in. Four people and two dogs in a very small space gets quite warm, but at least there is enough room for everyone without sitting on each other. I spend the next several minutes trying to find an online source that will give me the same updates on the "rotation" and where it is that I would get if my satellite didn't go out. I don't have any luck unfortunately, but the tv goes in and out, and I am able to hear occasional updates through the door.

DD2 gets scared. She doesn't understand what is going on. "Can the storm get in if we close the door?" I don't have the heart to tell her a strong tornado can rip the roof off, so I just tell her we'll be safe in here. At one point, she hides in the corner behind my wedding dress. The rest of the time is spent cuddled up to me.

After a while, DH calls again. They've let the customers leave the back of the store, and he's going to check out and come home. We can come out of the closet now.

DS2 - please crate the dogs for dinner. DDs - go sit in the living room please. I move my laptop back out to the living room and get back to getting dinner ready. Not 3 minutes later - what's that sound? Oh MAN!

Okay kids - back in the closet. I take a few seconds to toss the dinner plates in the stove and microwave, since I still don't know where Calamity is, grab my laptop, again, and head back to the closet.

A few minutes later, DH calls again. Wherever he is (I later find out he was outside by the car) is very noisy, and I don't have great reception in the house, especially that far away from the repeater. He's something store, something something closet, he's on his way.

I hear an update on the tv - the rotation/tornado just east of us. Since most storms seem to head northeast, the danger from this rotation has likely passed. Well, at this point, with DH on the way home, I'm just going to sit in the closet until he gets here and decides if the tornado has passed. He gets home, tells us it's safe to get out of the closet.

DH - "Oh, and why are you in the closet, you know that's an outside wall there and this is not the safest room. Next time either the bathrooms or DS2's closet would be safer. No outside walls." me - "Okay, but the main bathroom has glass shower doors and an outside wall. Our bathroom was dirty and smaller than this closet and DS2's closet is very small." DH - "No, that's not an outside wall in the main bathroom, that's the wall in DDs closet. I know, that's where I get access to the back of the tub for plumbing."

Oh, well, next time I'll know. Back out to the living room, time to finally sit down and eat.

Did you know that turkey burgers and homemade french fries do NOT taste good when they are cold? At least DH and DS1 remembered the salad dressing.

I've Got You Babe

Happy Gotcha Day to The Outlaws!

2007 - It had been 7 months since our dear cat Patches passed away suddenly from heart failure. Even though we had had at least one cat in the house our entire adult lives, we had decided to wait until we finished purchasing our house before getting any more cats. In those 7 months, I realized how much I, a life long dog person, missed having cats in the house.

On April 26th, we signed the papers for the house. On April 29th, DH fell in love with some beautiful medium hair gray kittens at an adoption event a local rescue was having at the petstore. We all went down to look at them - they were cute little boy kittens from the same litter named James and Jesse. Hmm... Jesse was a cute name, and I liked how Jesse and James worked together as names, but couldn't see calling a cat James for 15 or more years.

We found out on April 30 that we did not get those kitties.

DH went online that week. Now that we owned our house - it was time for cats! He found a beautiful calico kitten on a rescue site and talked to the foster mom. She had a litter of 4 - two boys, two girls, all different colors. Our application was approved and on May 2, 2007, DH went to the vet she worked at to see the cats and pick out the ones we wanted. I had just started a new job and couldn't go with him until after work, so I said - Your choice. My main criteria is I want kitties that will cuddle with me, and won't be too scared of the kids and dogs. Not knowing what combination of genders he would come home with, I gave him 2 boys names and a list of 3 girls names to choose from for them. (Left to his own devices, DH once named our black and white female cat Bozo. Now I try to take point on naming.)

The calico was too shy. The other 3 were pretty outgoing. The males were particularly cuddly, and the orange male would cry until you picked him up. We had 2 dogs, the limit in our town is 5 cats/dogs over the age of 4 months. We adopted three of them, and took them home that night.

They became ... The Outlaws:

Wyatt Earp

Jesse James

Calamity Jane.

Our GSD Daisy wanted to badly to play with them.....

and eventually they came around.

At four months we had them spayed and neutered. Calamity lived up to her name, having complications and requiring two follow-up surgeries.

They put up with excessive cuddling...

and playing.

They grew up.

They handled the arrival of a new puppy.

And they made me laugh.

Does this couch make my butt look big?

Happy First Gotcha Day to Calamity, Jesse and Wyatt. It's been a wonderful year, and I look forward to many more.
